The Vienna Chamber Opera, a highly regarded part of Vienna’s vital music and theater scene, was happy to launch its  2006-2007 season with the world premiere of A Good Man.  Said Holger Bleck, who,  with Isabella Gabor, produces, “We know from experience how much our audience enjoys American musicals. A Good Man was a great way to kick off our season. And we’re delighted with the response from the critics and at the box office.”

KammerOper - Granny - moon"This is a gripping story, both funny and sad, combined with rhythm, blues and gospel,  'the best American sound of music' from the vast plains of the Mississippi and its cotton fields. Albert himself is a fascinating character: a man with backbone who does not let anything dissuade him from his goal."
                                          - Franco Schedl, Events

Left: Carole Alston as GRANNY

"The legendary blues and jazz and the African-American church music merge with the story, and  in a remarkable integration,  transform it into a brilliant, joyful musical...A Good Man is an exceptional musical, well worth seeing and sometimes putting pressure on the tear glands."
                                             - Manuela Miebach, Der Neue Merker

"Another musical hit...once again, the Chamber Opera somehow gets everything just right: the simple, witty setting (Thomas George), Esther Muschol’s poignant, unaffected staging, and the ensemble, which brings honor beyond those lesser musicals that play on larger Vienna stages....This puts the Chamber Opera at the top of the heap in Vienna right now. Go!"

WHAT THE PLAY IS ABOUT
Rural Mississippi just after World War II is a changing place where blacks have been leaving and going north in droves. Not "Prince" Albert – he likes it here. A poor sharecropper – but a strong man and a gifted farmer – he is proud of his leadership and standing.  And when he finds out that his wife is pregnant after ten barren years, he decides to fulfill a dream -- to fix up and put fresh white paint on his little tenant house. That simple notion turns his world upside down.

He soon finds out  that many people, not only the whites – even his wife, his buddy just out of the army, his sexy sister-in-law, and his Preacher – don't want him to do it.  Some are determined to stop him.  As the cotton-growing season progresses, passions break out, and resentment and fear gather like a dark summer storm, shattering family and community, ending in a harrowing and unexpected act of violence which, in spite of its pain, brings a new bloom of love and redemption.

The show is dramatic, funny, sad, and full of life and rhythm, with a blues, gospel, and Americana score that has had audiences clapping and singing.

PRODUCTION NOTES

A GOOD MAN is envisioned as a UNIT SET show: Albert’s House, with its yard, porch, kitchen and bedroom at one side, and the front of the barn of the landlord, Mr. Tittle, at the other.  The lane and the field are just there among the greens.  There may be roll-on or prop settings for the Church, Store, and Cotton Gin scenes.

There are NINE ROLES (6 men, 3 women).

The score is orchestrated for FOUR PLAYERS: Piano/Organ, Guitar/Harmonica, Bass, Drums.
